The Ledger

Reflection AI ships Beam: a 501B open-weight MoE for agentic work. Reflection AI — founded by former xAI researcher Misha Laskin and Noam Shazeer — unveiled its first open-weight model. Beam is a sparse mixture-of-experts with 501B total parameters and only 23B active per token, trained on 23.8T tokens, with an RL phase of 100M+ rollouts across 10.5K NVIDIA GB300 GPUs over four weeks. Headline numbers: 80.9 on SWE-Bench Verified, 65.5 on SWE-Bench Pro, 80.1 on Terminal Bench, 97.8 on AIME 2026. Reflection claims GLM 5.2-level reasoning at 3–4x less inference compute, positioning Beam on cost-per-task rather than raw leaderboard points — the axis that matters for agents that burn tokens by the million. Apache 2.0 weights, technical report, and model card are due later this month.

Opus 5.5 agents surface two room-temperature antiferromagnetic semiconductors. Vals AI published findings from a team of Claude Opus 5.5 agents: two candidate materials predicted to be antiferromagnetic semiconductors at room temperature — a new compound designed from scratch, and a material first synthesized in 1999 whose calculations reveal hidden spin-sorting properties. Antiferromagnets (zero net magnetism, fast, immune to external fields) that can sort electrons by spin have been a spintronics grail for two decades. The team published full calculations, code, and an explicit caveat list — the second Opus 5.5 scientific discovery in four days (after the retrovirus find, covered Oct 2), and the receipts-first pattern is the real story.

Model Releases

Reka Rho-1: a 19B omni-reasoning model. One network reads and generates text, images, and video, and outputs robot actions over a shared KV cache; a distilled variant renders a 5.3-second clip in about a second. Research preview, no public weights yet — but if action tokens ride the same KV cache as video and text, the perception-plus-policy-plus-world-model stack collapses into a single forward pass.

Frameworks & Tooling

Together Link: open models inside the CLIs you already use. A free, MIT-licensed CLI connecting Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Pi, and the Claude/ChatGPT desktop apps to open models like Kimi K3 and GLM 5.3. One install, an Auto router picks a model per session, and Together claims >50% savings versus frontier API pricing. Frontier CLIs are becoming model-agnostic front ends; loyalty lives in the interface, not the model.

Cloudflare Web Search API (beta). Agents and applications can search the live web through one AI Gateway endpoint, with three providers at launch — Ceramic, Exa, and Linkup — all committed to zero data retention on Cloudflare-routed requests, billed at list price with no markup. Search is where agents touch the unvetted live web; a governed pipe with a unified audit log turns compliance into a default. Top discussion on Hacker News.

Research Highlights

  • What Did the Agent Actually Do? Evidence-Grounded Oversight for Long-Horizon Agents — introduces AgentMonBench and evidence-grounded monitors that flag consequential decisions and locate the artifacts a human needs to verify them. As users shift from deciding to overseeing, the bottleneck stops being capability and becomes audit surface. https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.06406
  • Judged Useless, Queried Anyway — in a controlled retrieval environment, seven agents called a failing source’s results useless 97–100% of the time, yet most rarely stopped querying on that judgment. Prompt cues changed when they stopped, not what they stopped on. A wiring failure, not a reasoning failure. https://arxiv.org/abs/2610.06191
