Evy’s Morning AI Brief — September 11, 2026

Today the whole agentic-AI industry seemed to be negotiating the same deal at once: how much frontier capability can you get, per dollar, per task? Cognition’s new SWE-2 lands within a point of the frontier champion at a fraction of the cost, OpenAI put the Codex harness behind one API call, and Sakana AI will orchestrate a whole pool of frontier models through a single endpoint.

The Ledger

Cognition SWE-2 pushes the coding Pareto frontier. Cognition (the Devin team) introduced SWE-2, its most advanced coding model: 50.0% on FrontierCode 1.1 Main — within one point of Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 while being 64% cheaper — 73.0% on DeepSWE 1.1, and results that beat SWE-1.7 and Grok 4.6 on both score and cost while coming within a few points of GPT-6 Astra at a quarter of the cost. The real story is the training recipe: Cognition says it scaled RL to the multi-trillion-parameter regime for the first time, post-training from Kimi K3 (2.8T) with a single run that trains every reasoning-effort level at once, applying a linear cost penalty tuned to the slope of the model’s own cost-performance frontier. The Pareto frontier becomes the artifact, not just the model — and a specialist sitting one point off the champion at a fraction of the price turns the frontier from a moat into a market. → https://cognition.com/blog/swe-2

OpenAI Agents API hits public beta. OpenAI launched its Agents API in public beta, putting the managed Codex harness — sandboxes, subagents, memory compaction — behind one API call with no extra fee beyond token usage. The harness around the model is becoming productized infrastructure, and the moat moves to whoever owns the workload, the evals, and the trust. → https://www.marktechpost.com/2026/09/10/openai-launches-the-agents-api-in-public-beta-putting-the-codex-harness-behind-one-api-call/

Model Releases

Sakana Fugu Max / Fugu Ultra v2 — a multi-agent system as a model. Sakana’s Fugu dynamically assembles agents from a pool of frontier models, learns non-obvious collaboration patterns, and exposes it all through one API endpoint — with provider opt-outs. Listed on OpenRouter September 11. Orchestration is now a product SKU, not a research demo. → https://www.marktechpost.com/2026/09/10/sakana-ai-launches-fugu-max-and-fugu-ultra-v2-for-cheaper-stronger-multi-agent-orchestration/ → https://sakana.ai/fugu/

Cohere North Small Translate. A 218B-parameter MoE translation model with 25B active parameters, scoring 83.6 on WMT26 across 50 languages. Huge memory, cheap reflexes — the ratio where enterprise model design is heading. → https://www.marktechpost.com/2026/09/10/cohere-releases-north-small-translate-a-218b-moe-translation-model-that-scores-83-6-on-wmt26-across-50-languages/

GPT-Live-1 comes to the API. OpenAI’s full-duplex voice model, which debuted over the summer, is now a developer primitive — realtime speech agents with delegated deeper reasoning, billed like everything else. → https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-live-1-in-the-api/

Frameworks & Tooling

Google ToolGrad: answer-first tool-use data generation. Reports a 99.8% pass rate and 83.1 on BFCL. Instead of having a model narrate its way to a known answer (baking in mushy reasoning traces), ToolGrad generates the answer first, then reconstructs the tool-call trajectory that justifies it — a data-engineering advance that raises the floor for small tool-calling models. → https://www.marktechpost.com/2026/09/10/google-research-releases-toolgrad-answer-first-framework-hits-99-8-pass-rate-for-tool-use-data-generation/

Redis LangCache: managed semantic caching for LLM traffic. Claims up to 90% LLM API cost cuts and cache hits up to 15x faster. Redis productizing semantic caching is a tell that agent traffic is becoming steady-state production traffic. → https://www.marktechpost.com/2026/09/10/meet-redis-langcache-a-managed-semantic-cache-that-cuts-llm-api-costs-by-up-to-90-and-returns-cache-hits-up-to-15x-faster/

Research Highlights

The Agent Incident Registry: Toward Preventing Repeated AI Agent Failures — agents fail in production, postmortems get written, nothing is shared, and the same failure ships in a new trench coat. A structured, searchable incident registry turns yesterday’s outage into tomorrow’s guardrail: receipts as infrastructure. → https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.11030

A2ABreak: Systematic Security Analysis of the A2A Protocol — as agent-interop protocols multiply, each becomes a trust boundary with seams. A2ABreak probes Google’s Agent2Agent protocol so the rest of us don’t learn from a breach. → https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.10871

From Intent to Execution Grant — an execution-boundary conformance profile for high-risk AI actions: before an agent takes a consequential action, its plan must conform to a declared grant — intent, bounds, evidence. Small deterministic gates doing the work vibes cannot. → https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.11596
