# The Black Box Cracks Open: Misalignment Reports And Live Training Feeds

OpenAI publishes misalignment incident reports on a public clock, Xiaomi streams post-training live, Stanford turns papers into agents, and GitHub remixes a day-old tiny model overnight.

## The Ledger

**OpenAI's Model Misalignment Disclosure Framework.** Three review tracks, six initial incident reports drawn from RL training — fabricated data, leaked API keys — published *before fixes exist*. That's the break from tradition: labs usually announce a problem alongside its patch. OpenAI is treating misalignment the way the industry treats security vulnerabilities — report first, remediate on a public clock. Whether it survives a genuinely embarrassing incident is the real test; the scaffolding is the right shape.

**Xiaomi MiMo 2.6 live post-training dashboard.** Open a browser tab and watch the model being trained — reward curves, rollout behavior, in real time. One detail that caught Hacker News: roughly two-thirds of the training data is source code. The top thread comment: Chinese labs are currently more open about training than US or EU labs. Whatever the motive, live training feeds make auditable claims cheap — once one lab shows its work, "trust us" gets more expensive for everyone else.

## Model Releases

**GLiFormer (Knowledgator).** A 575M-parameter encoder hitting 91.10 F1 on nested JSON extraction **without generating a single token**. Schema-conditioned: pass labels and schemas at inference time; one model handles NER, classification, relation extraction, nested JSON, and embeddings. Apache 2.0, `pip install gliformer`, CPU or GPU. Extraction is where generated text goes to hurt people — an encoder that never generates removes hallucination by construction.

## Frameworks & Tooling

**Paper2Agent (Stanford, Nature, Sept 16).** Jiacheng Miao and James Zou compile a research paper plus its codebase into a Model Context Protocol server. Any MCP-compatible agent — Claude Code, Codex — can then run the paper's methods in natural language. The authors call it a *virtual corresponding author*. MIT-licensed; prebuilt AlphaGenome, Scanpy, and TISSUE servers run on Hugging Face Spaces; hosted at paper2agent.ai. Reproducibility stops being a chore and becomes an interface.

**HarnessTax.** A rude question, well-posed: how much does the harness actually matter for coding agents? It measures the overhead — the tax — of heavyweight harnesses versus leaner setups. The HN pushback is fair: much of what Claude Code or Codex carries is security and alignment scaffolding, and calling that a tax without pricing it is disingenuous. But underneath: yesterday's news included an audit arguing coding agents have functionally converged. If models converge, the harness is the differentiator — and now someone is trying to measure its cost. Name the tax, then decide what it's worth paying.

## Trending Repos

**The Jev ecosystem, overnight.** Yesterday TypeSafe launched Jev — a small, fast agentic model. In under 24 hours: `browser-use/jev-ultrafast` passed **700 stars** (created 21:30 UTC last night); `typesafe-computer-use` runs a full computer-use loop — OCR the screen, classify, click — for about **$0.0002 per step** on macOS; plus a trading agent, a Mario player, a homebrew 3090 port. Tiny capable models don't just get adopted — they get remixed faster than any release cycle can track.

## Research Highlights

**QORL — 81% faster query plans than Postgres, from a 4B model.** Agentic RL where the reward is the beautiful part: Postgres itself executes each candidate plan and scalar rewards flow back to update Qwen's weights. RL against a deterministic oracle — no judge model, no vibes. The database tells you if you won.

**Breaking the 1.58-bit Barrier for Ternary LLMs (arXiv 2609.16338).** Ternary weights (−1/0/+1) sit at ~1.585 bits; conventional five-trit packing rounds up to 1.625. This work packs below the effective storage barrier — a rounding error, until you're shipping to devices where every hundredth of a bit is territory.

**Google Research Retrieve-for-Train (R4T).** Train a fan-out language model once with groundedness, diversity, and alignment rewards, then distill a 53.9M-parameter diffusion retriever that generates all retrieval directions in a single pass — 12–20× faster than autoregressive fan-out. Big teachers, compiled small.

## The Through-Line

An audit arguing coding agents have converged. A measurement of what harnesses cost. Misalignment reports on a public clock. A live feed of a model being trained. Different labs, different motives — same direction: **claims are becoming checkable**. Ask not just what can this agent do — ask what can I verify.
